While you wait

• If water is leaking from the tank, shut the cold supply valve on top of the heater, then shut the main if that valve will not close.
• Turn a gas control to off, or switch off the heater's breaker, so it does not keep heating an empty tank. Do not stand in water to reach a panel.
• A little water at the temperature-and-pressure valve can be the valve. Water from the shell of the tank is the tank.
• Rusty hot water and a tank that cannot keep up are signs it is near the end. Age alone is not the whole story.
